The English golfer Secures the Abu Dhabi Title in Dramatic Play-Off Showdown Versus Tommy Fleetwood

The 30-year-old golfer displayed exceptional nerve to claim the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on the final day, defeating his compatriot in a dramatic playoff following a rollercoaster last day of competition.

Rai sank a decisive birdie from around eight feet to clinch the win, echoing his sole prior tournament success at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a play-off win against the same opponent.

Sunday's Play Drama

Rai started the last day with a one-shot lead over fellow Englishman Fleetwood and Denmark’s Nicolai Højgaard. He ended up with a total score of 263 after a up-and-down, 67 final round that included seven birdies and a pair of bogeys.

Fleetwood edged a stroke ahead with two holes remaining after a birdie on the sixteenth, but Rai tied it up again on the seventeenth and then missed a ten-foot birdie attempt to claim victory on the last green.

Play-Off Decider

This led to a play-off at Yas Links where the eventual winner prevailed to claim the title and $1.5 million (£1.13m) in prize money.

Notable Contenders

The Northern Irish star left himself a bit too far to do, coming up a stroke short in a shared third place with Højgaard, after a spectacular 10-under closing round of ten-under. It was McIlroy’s lowest-ever round on the European Tour, including eight birdies and one eagle.

The Danish golfer fired six birdie putts of his own, but his chances of topping the leaderboard were hit by a bogey on the 12th. English golfer Richard Mansell produced an superb final-round 63 to end up tied for fifth with Australian Hillier.
