No less than 64 Dead in Rio's Biggest Police Raid on Criminal Groups
A minimum of 64 civilians lost their lives in a security raid against the organized crime group in the Brazilian city's north zone - the biggest and most lethal operation in the area's records.
Four security agents were among those killed during the security mission in the communities of Alemão and Penha, state officials reported. More than 80 people were arrested.
Intense confrontations commenced when about 2,500 law enforcement officers initiated the operation on Tuesday morning. The criminal organization responded with gunfire, igniting obstacles and dropping bombs from drones, police representatives confirmed.
The UN Human Rights Office stated it felt "horrified" by the security action, calling for "prompt and effective investigations".
Raid Aftermath
The area of favelas adjacent to Rio's airport is regarded as the central command of among the nation's strongest illegal networks.
State officials stated at least 50 of those killed were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".
Dozens of people were injured, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.
Community Response
Residents have likened the elevated neighborhood - inhabited by approximately 300,000 residents - to a "battlefield" since the raid started.
Roads remain closed across the area.
Criminal Expansion
The Comando Vermelho organization has been growing their territory across the Rio state, expanding narcotics distribution networks and dominance over the slum communities.
Local law enforcement said over 200kg (441lb) of narcotics were captured in the raid, in addition to dozens of firearms.
