Extreme heat and intense wildfires have devastated the dry landscape of Western Australia. With mercury levels expected to continue soaring above 40C (104F) over the coming days, a severe heatwave warning has been declared across a large portion of the south-west.

Widespread Heatwave Alerts Throughout Multiple States

This situation follow this month's fires in New South Wales, which caused the destruction of homes and fatalities. Severe heatwave warnings have also been activated for the coming days in parts of SA and NSW, as a ridge of high pressure shifts eastward, delivering intense heat to much of the region.

The combination of extremely dry land and relentless high temperatures creates a dangerous situation for emergency crews.

Global Weather Extremes Cause Chaos

Elsewhere, a metropolis was plunged into blackout recently after powerful winds damaged the city’s electrical network, with falling trees knocking out electricity cables. The weather conditions also led to significant travel disruption at a key airport, where hundreds of air services were grounded. Severe damage to electrical infrastructure is anticipated to cause ongoing issues as service providers scramble to reconnect electricity to more than 1 million inhabitants.

Atypical Mist Blankets Sunny Area

At the same time, a region famed for its sunny weather and plentiful sunshine has endured one of its dullest and most overcast periods on record. A particular form of low cloud, which usually lingers for only a few days, has been remarkably extensive and long-lasting this year, holding the mercury at a major airport below 8C for over a week – the most prolonged period in more than three decades. The extended haze has been driven by unprecedented fall precipitation that resulted in soils saturated.

Storm Delivers Wintry Weather to Holiday Islands

And in another country, a powerful storm has ushered in heavy rainfall, powerful gales and even snowfall to a set of islands – conditions many would not associate with this popular tourist spot.
