Abigail Spanberger Establishes History as Virginia's Initial Woman Governor

Throughout 250 years, Virginia has seen 74 state executives, all of them men. Recently, Abigail Spanberger broke this longstanding tradition by being elected as the initial woman to hold the office in the commonwealth's records.

Emphasizing Economic Issues and Targeted Opposition

The former US congresswoman and Central Intelligence Agency case officer succeeded with a campaign that focused on cost-of-living issues and deliberately challenged Donald Trump's policies instead of the person.

Beginnings and Education

Hailing from in a New Jersey town on August 7, 1979, she relocated to a Virginia community at her early teens. Her father was an military serviceman who subsequently worked in police work; her mother was a nurse and volunteer.

She attended the UVA, receiving a diploma in French studies. Post-graduation, she had a short stint as a educator before embarking on a life of service.

“I grew up knowing that I wanted to walk the same path as my dad and I did,” Spanberger shared with attendees at a gathering in the city of Norfolk recently.

Professional Path

At the federal agency, she investigated involving drugs, child predators and money launderers. She executed search and arrest warrants, often being the only woman on the operation squad. She then entered the CIA and focused on counter-terrorism cases, working covertly and abroad.

Life Change

In that year, she and her spouse, an technical professional, considered their future. Living on the Pacific coast, they were contemplating another foreign posting. They took out a world map and asked their eldest daughter, then in kindergarten, where they should go. Virginia, she answered, because “all our loved ones reside in Virginia”.

Spanberger stated at her rally: “And so we opted to shift from a national duty, to service to community because she was right. All our relatives are in Virginia.”

Congressional Run

Back in Virginia, she participated in Moms Demand Action, which combats gun violence, and founded a Girl Scout troop. In 2017, she decided to run for Congress, which advisers told her was a “crazy endeavour” because no Democrat had secured the congressional seat in decades.

“But I saw what the president was implementing with his executive power and how he was dividing communities. And I saw my representative consistently work against the Affordable Care Act. And I knew I had to step up. So for the record: I won.”

Centrist Approach

In the capital, she rapidly became part of the moderate Democrats, a collection of moderate and budget-conscious Democrats. She concentrated on lower-profile issues: expanding broadband to the countryside, fighting narcotics trade and support for former troops.

She earned a reputation for working with colleagues across the aisle and was consistently rated as the most cooperative member of the Virginia delegation. She was vocal about political rhetoric that she felt alienated independents, cautioning her party against ideological slogans that could be used against them in swing areas.

Centrist Group

Along with Representatives Elissa Slotkin and an ex-navy pilot, she was dubbed a part of the “pragmatic group” in contrast to the left-leaning “squad” of the New York representative.

State Leadership Bid

In that autumn, she announced she would step down for a another term and would instead seek the state's top office in the next election.

Her campaign highlighted ideas of public service, advocacy for schools and public works and defense of democratic institutions. Her intelligence experience gave her authority on defense issues and she described public service as a calling rather than a job.

Successful Campaign

This enabled her to withstand Republican opponent Winsome Earle-Sears’s attacks on cultural issues, notably the assertion that she is an extremist on individual freedoms and medical services for the LGBTQ+ community.

Spanberger, who consistently argued that communities should determine whether transgender students can participate in school athletics, cast her opponent as the candidate more out of step with the center of the state's voters.
